The January 3rd meeting

With morning temperatures in the 30s again this month President Dr. John Hunt brought the gavel down at 9:00 am. John introduced the new EC members for 2010.  A few less than our usual hundred or so attendees were updated with the latest Winter Rally plans. Vice President Wayne Givens reviewed the activities plans for the coming months.  Bill Robinson, President of Riding Into History, presented an entertaining 20 minute video that was an advanced sneek preview of a TV show produced by Dennis Gauge that will be shown on the Speed Channel. The subject was Dennis and his son Sam's trip to the 2009 Riding Into History. Thanks Bill.

December/January Club Happenings

Saturday December 12 Holiday Party by Don Sipler

The day long down pour of  rain barely dampened the spirits of the BMWNEFers. Even though it was a nearly 2 hour drive to Camp Blanding for many of us the Festive Holiday Luncheon began promptly at 2:00pm.

Due to the driving conditions many folks missed the pre luncheon opening by President Dr. John Hunt and the prayer provided be Jim Quinn.

The tables were gloriously decorated. The food was a big hit with ham and turkey and several side dishes and desserts brought by the members.

2010 PENGUIN RIDE by Jim Stevenson

The man behind the camera, originated the BMWNEF January 1st Ride tradition  and planned and led this years 9th annual Penguin Ride. Thanks Alan.

Like most years, the weather was appropriate. It was cold and rainy.  In fact it was monsoon type rainy, at least for awhile. We can safely say that it was the hardest and most rain we have had this year!

Alan Singer

In spite of the rain and chilly temps, a horde of bikers collected under the shelter of the Bank drive through at the Gate station. The bank shelter provided a perfect place for our ride meeting as well as a place to dry out before the start of the real Penguin ride. Alan had several routes laid out but we decided on a 50 mile segment.

Some left to ride their own rides, others to go directly to the restaurant and some might have gone home, at least for awhile.  Lunch was scheduled for 1 PM.  About 20 of us left for the 50 mile segment, yes I know that was a short ride as Club rides go but it was a long enough considering the weather. We rode the back country around The World Golf Village and other roads in that general area.

We arrived at the Bridge Market & Bistro under the bridge near the Intercoastal at SR 210 and Roscoe in Ponte Vedra Beach. It looks like it was formerly a fish camp. We were joined by many more members that had shown in their four wheel vehicles. We had at least 50 folks in attendance.  The food was great, service was terrific and a good time of fellowship was had with our many friends.

If you missed this annual BMWNEF event, try to make it next year as you will have a good time.

Runny Nose Ride by Fred Veator Bonaire, Ga.

It’s about this time of year that you will notice all kinds of Christmas type toy runs listed in the local biker mags. You’ll also notice that most of them are in Florida, but not all of them. For the past several years there is one put on by the BMW owners of Ga. that leaves the BMW of Atlanta shop on the last Sunday before Christmas. If starting in Atlanta isn’t already cold enough they ride north for a 100 miles to Towns county Sheriff’s office to deliver the toys. (Home of the Georgia Mountain Rally). This year when we left BMW of Atlanta it was 34o and when we got to Hiawassee it was 33o only 1 degree from being cold.

Marilyn must have had electrically heated panty hose on for this ride

Thirty riders at 30 degrees

If this weren’t enough, after dropping of the toys, they decided to ride even further north into North Carolina for lunch. (Man those Ga. riders are tough) By the time I had arrived back at my house in Bonaire I had rode over 450 miles and 12 hours in temperatures that never got out of the low 30’s, but I was not cold. I noticed when Bob had his gather-round at his shop before the ride that everyone had some kind of electric cord hanging out from under their coats. Some had only one cord (like me) and some had enough wires hanging out to re-wire a C-130 Gunship.
After riding my motorcycle to work EVERY DAY for 25 years and for the past 12 years have made a trip between Florida and middle Georgia almost weekly, I have learned a few thing about riding in the cold. It doesn’t take a lot of riding gear for a cold weather sprint of 7-9 miles to make it to work, but if you’re going at it all day its time for plan ‘B”. The best protection against the cold when riding is a motorcycle with a full faring. The first line of protection for staying warm is to have something to keep the direct windblast off as much of your body parts as possible. For the past 11 years I have rode my Triumph Trophy with a full faring during the winter months. With an electric jacket liner and electric glove liners I was good to go even in temps below freezing.  The old Trophy has over 180,000 miles and had earned a rest so I decided to ride my new Triumph Tiger year round. (Besides I love riding the Tiger) The new Tiger has a windshield, but very little in the way of a faring; it’s not your father’s Gold Wing. It was time to brake out the maximum cold weather gear again.

Santa rides a LT

I made the only track in the snow at TWO

I start with just a long-sleeved tee shirt under my electric jacket liner. The closer to your skin you can make the electric liner the better it works. Just don’t wear it with anything between it and your skin or you will have red lines where the heated wires touched your skin. (Don’t ask me how I know this).  Then it’s my winter riding coat, with its liner. I use the plug-ins for my electric glove liners that come out of the end of each sleeve on the coat. For my legs I wear a pair of winter riding pants over a set of good long johns with wool socks. After I put on my riding pants I slide a set of shin-guards down inside between the riding pants and the long johns. I have a pair of shin-guards that I still use when riding my dirt bike and can be bought in any M/C shop that sells dirt bike riding gear.

The shin-guards are made of plastic with a felt pad on the inside and are long enough to cover your knees and go to the top of your boots. Once you get them installed you can’t even tell you’re wearing them and they keep those knees that are out there in the wind from getting cold. I have tried all kind of boots and still after a couple hours the cold seeps in and when my feet are cold I’m cold. I have found a simple solution to cold feet. Wal-Mart sells some chemical warm-up packs for both hands and feet. I have found the hand ones work the best in your feet. I put one under my sock right up under my toes on each foot they last for about 8 hours. It says on the pack not to put them against your Skin, as they will get too hot, I never noticed them getting to hot, I guess the makers don’t realize just how cold a motorcycle riders feet get. One of the best things invented since the stand-up urinal is the full-face flip up helmet. Not only does it keep your head and face warm you can flip it open to tell your buddy his turn signal is on or cuss out the guy in the SUV that just cut you off.

Some of the naysayers who don’t use electric gear use the argument that what if it fails, you would not be dressed warm enough and you would freeze to death or worse. All I can say is if your electrics fail stop and fix them. This happened to me and I spent a cold 30 minutes, in the dark in a rest area, re-wiring a BMW electric plug with frozen fingers. To this day I don’t use a BMW plug. I use a 2-prong plug from Advance-Auto (2 for 2.29) and they work. The salesman at the Gerbing booth may make it sound like you need all kinds of extra wires and temperature controls to go with your electric gear. MAKE IT SIMPLE!!

That white stuff is not ash fall out

I have one wire to plug into my motorcycle and an in-line rocker type on-off switch going to my liner that controls both my gloves and liner. The switch is laying right in my lap and when it gets to hot I turn it off and when I get cold I turn it back on. Some riders have separate temperature controls for both gloves and liner. Every time you add electrical components and all the extra electric plug-ins that go with them you are increasing your chances of an electric failure and a chance of freezing to death or worse.

The 2010 Winter Rally

Is FULL!

We have maxed out our registrations at 110% and are turning away requests to be placed on a waiting list.  A great compliment to the good work of our previous Rally Committees!   We want this year’s rally to be equally great!

We are still in need of volunteers.  Sign up by contacting David Sturgis at davidsturgis@yahoo.com

We also need Door Prize donations!!  Please remember to ask the places you frequent for something for our Door Prize area.  Anything will help…a gift card, t-shirt, or maybe something much bigger.  It never hurts to ask.  The door prizes are a big part of our rally and our fund raising.  If you need an “official Rally” receipt to give the donor, we will be happy to supply you some.  You can bring your donated prizes to the Door Prize Desk at the rally.

And – one last thing - please remember to bring your home-made desserts.  This is a favorite part of the steak dinner night.  It is also better if the desserts are easily picked up by hand to eat.

See you at the Rally on the 15th!

Joining us in December we have William “Bill” and Virginia “Ginny” Botkin of Yulee FL. Apparently they moved into Jim and Millie’s neighborhood and you know, if Millie spots a potential club member, she is sure to pass the word about our great club. They also visited our club website prior to moving here from the Tampa area. Bill is
a member of Tampa Bay BMW Riders and they spoke highly of BMWNEF when he mentioned he was moving to NE Florida. Bill is a retired AA Pilot and has been riding some 44 years on and off. Currently riding a 2005 K1200LT.

Ginny is a CPA who has been riding a year now. She apparently enjoys it as she has a 1986 R80RT and a 1948 WL Harley to ride. We’re glad they have joined us and we plan to promptly live up to the good reputation shared by the Tampa Bay Riders.

Joining in mid December we welcome Ruben Andina of Jacksonville. He is an Electronic Technician. IT at Bank of America - Merrill Lynch. He has been riding 9 years on a 1951 R25/1 and just 2 months ago, added a 2004 R1200CL. He found us while researching for BMW information on the internet and decided to join the local club to make new friends that share the passion for BMW motorcycles.

Joining in early December 09, we welcome Robert Lecky of West Palm Beach FL.  He is the Building Department Director, for the Town of Jupiter, Florida. Robert has been riding for over 15 years, currently aboard an ’07 K1200RS. He previously owned a '99 K11ooS, '99R1100 (Margaret’s ride) and a couple of Hondas and Yamahas. He found us in the BMW Owners News. “I've been attending the Winter Rally for several years and thought it was a good idea to become an actual member.”

Subject: Frozen carburetor

(True Story)

In  the fun world of the administration of justice, not all the laughs are in the court-room. Indeed, giggles and guffaws can erupt at almost any time or place.

For example:  On a bitterly cold winter's day several years ago in northern British Columbia, Canada - a Royal Canadian Mounted Police constable on patrol came across a motorcyclist, who was swathed in protective clothing and helmet, stalled by the roadside.

"What's the matter?" asked the policeman.

"Carburetor's frozen," was the terse reply.

"Pee on it. That'll thaw it out."

"Can't."

"OK, Watch me and I will show you."

The constable lubricated the carburetor, as promised.   The bike started and the rider drove off, waving.

A few days later, the detachment office received a thank you note from the father of the stranded motorbike rider.

It began:  "On behalf of my daughter, who recently was stranded..."
