Tour the Honey Bee Research and Extension Lab (HBREL) on the Gainesville campus of the University of Florida. Opened in 2018, the $4.4 million lab is an internationally recognized facility for its educational leadership, laboratory research, and ability to conduct outdoor research year-round, as well as support a significant number of commercial and hobbyist beekeepers. Florida is ground zero for beekeeping in the US.
The lab is headed by Dr. Jamie Ellis, who will take us on a private tour. Dr. Ellis is an Endowed Professor with responsibilities in extension, instruction, and research related to honey bees. He created the UF, South Florida, Caribbean Bee Colleges, and the Florida Master Beekeeper Program. He supervises Ph.D. and masters students and offers an online course in apiculture. Ellis and his team conduct research projects in honey bee husbandry, conservation and ecology, and integrated crop pollination.
